French Cast Stone and Iron White Flamingo

French Cast Stone and Iron White Flamingo

We jumped at the chance to buy this grouping of four French flamingos and a heron (shown in the last two photos), and this is the white flamingo. Made of cast stone with iron legs, and very solid, he cuts a dashing figure, in spite of the recent, but attractively-done, painted surface. Note the iron legs that cleverly meld into the hand-painted splayed feet on the base. In excellent condition with no cracks, breaks or repairs, he would lend a whimsical note to your garden, alone or grouped with the other flamingos.

Life-Sized English Cast Stone Fox

Life-Sized English Cast Stone Fox

We love animal figures of all types and sizes and this beauty of a fox doesn’t disappoint. Made of cast stone and sporting his original tawny glass eyes, this figure is realistically posed in a semi-crouched position, resting on two delicate paws with his tail swept underneath him. He has a lovely weathered patina and moss around his tail that will continue to develop if placed in a damp and shady spot. In excellent condition with no breaks, cracks or repairs, we suggest bringing him inside in harsh winters, or placing him on a piece of stone and covering him. Foxes are a rare find, especially one of this quality and condition.

French Carved Limestone Curly-Coated Spaniel Dog Statue

What a beauty! The intricate detailing of the spaniel's coat and the anticipatory expression on his face, his head lifted to his owner, is simply marvelous. In excellent condition, he has a coat of greening from being exposed to damp shade that will only continue to mature and develop into moss if he is kept in contact with damp earth. You can see details of the figure in both bright sunlight and in damp shade in the photos below. A perfect addition to your garden or placed atop a step to your home, he is a must-have for any spaniel owners. Please note that as he is hand-carved of limestone, he should be brought inside in harsh winter climates.

Pair of French Cast Stone Pink Flamingos, Circa 1960s

Pair of French Cast Stone Pink Flamingos, Circa 1960s

For all you fans of classic garden flamingos, these are the real deal. Entirely made of cast stone over an iron armature, and with a weathered and old, likely original, pink and black painted surface, the form and detailing on these flamingos is fabulous. Both flamingos have hand-incised feather detailing on their backs, outlined on old black and white paint, and their facial expressions are properly insouciant. WIth beautifully-angled legs and detailed joints, the iron armature underneath the cast stone lends additional strength. In very good vintage condition, neither has any cracks, breaks, repairs, or missing parts, although there are a few chips and faint paint crack lines to the legs near the feet. Placed together against a green hedge or in a border bed, these will give you decades of whimsical pleasure. We recommend bringing them indoors for the winter in cold climates, but they will do very well outside year-round in warm areas.

Early Lichened French Cast Stone Flamingo on Carved Stone Base

Early Lichened French Cast Stone Flamingo on Carved Stone Base

Fabulous in all respects, this polychromed cast stone flamingo is loaded with lichen, moss and old paint that achieves a pitch-perfect look. Hand-incised feather strokes along his entire torso and sides show multiple coats of old pink, white, grey and black paint, now graced with lichen and moss. His original spindly and rusty legs show remnants of yellow and red paint, and have been inserted into a later carved stone base, which is sufficiently heavy to provide needed support. The particularly graceful S-curve of his neck and shape of his head and beak not seen in later flamingo figures makes this a very special piece indeed. Although quite capable of living outdoors year-round in warm climates, this piece should be brought inside at the first sign of frost to extend his gorgeous patina and longevity. Please note that he will need to be crated prior to non-local delivery. The overall measurements are listed below, but for clarity, please note that the statue measures 38 inches high x 5.5 inches wide (body) x 22 inches wide, while the base is 11.88 inches diameter. There is a minor scrape to the carved stone base that will weather over in time, and there is a very slight sway to the legs when the piece is moved, but it is stable overall.

Tall French Cast Stone White Heron with Iron Legs

Tall French Cast Stone White Heron with Iron Legs

We love this beauty dating to the mid 20th Century, even though his paint is not original. He has a wonderful face and form and is in excellent antique condition, but does show a few cracks in the paint that do not extend to the underlying body. His legs are made of wrought iron and are cleverly melded into cast stone feet atop the rock-like base. He would make a wonderful addition to your garden, near a water feature or pond. Please note that he should be brought inside in cold winter climates to extend his longevity. Also, the width of the statue listed below is the overall dimension, including the base, but the maximum width of his body alone is 7 inches.

Pair of Life-Sized English Cast Stone Eagles with Outstretched Wings

Pair of Life-Sized English Cast Stone Eagles with Outstretched Wings

This grand pair of cast stone eagles is simply stunning, and the size is notable. Identical in nature, the detailed casting shows the eagles with fully-outstretched wings, having just alighted on rocky outcropped bases. The depth and detail of the wings, claws and tail is outstanding and they would make the perfect adornments atop tall gate piers at the entrance to your home or garden. There is a very small and barely-noticeable chip to one feather of one wing that has full weathered-over, so it is not discernible to the casual eye. With gorgeous patination, these eagles will do your estate proud.

Exceptional Hand-Carved English Limestone Turkey

Exceptional Hand-Carved English Limestone Turkey

Now here is a figure we've never seen before and it is a stunner! A male turkey, nearly life-sized, he has been hand-carved from limestone and beautifully-weathered over the course of many years. Difficult to see because of the patination, his head features a prominent snood and wattles and the carving on his feathers and claws is exceptional. He would be stunning placed atop a pedestal at the center of a parterre or in the midst of a vegetable garden. In perfect condition, he is a most unusual find and one that will not last long. Benjamin Franklin advocated for the turkey to become the national bird of the United States, but lost out to Charles Thomson's choice of the bald eagle, which Franklin considered a "bird of bad moral character".

Pair of Life-Sized Cast Marble Greyhounds

Pair of Life-Sized Cast Marble Greyhounds

If you are into dogs, this may be the pair for you! Identical in form, and with a lightly-weathered patina, these life-sized greyhounds don't have a huge amount of age, but they are truly impressive in the flesh. Left outside year-round, they will develop a darker, more weathered patina if left untreated, but we can also coat them for you if you like their pale color or darken the patina. Shown on steel stands in the photos, we have priced them with and without the stands below. Imagine them flanking your front door or the entrance to your garden! Please note there is one old repair to one hind leg of one dog. The stands were custom-made for us from very heavy steel and have just been repainted in a glossy black.

17th Century Limestone Lion's Head on Contemporary Polished Steel Stand

17th Century Limestone Lion's Head on Contemporary Polished Steel Stand

What an amazing piece of sculpture! This fierce lion's head is quite large and magnificently-carved from limestone with a depth and crispness that belie its true age. Loaded with moss, it does have a few minor chips that were incurred in shipping, but we can color them if you so desire. The head rests firmly on a separate and heavy polished steel stand that is very sleek and so works extremely well in a contemporary  or antique setting.

English Polychromed Terracotta Lion on Carved Stone Plinth

English Polychromed Terracotta Lion on Carved Stone Plinth

We were thrilled to find this rare and regal lion integrally mounted on a carved Yorkstone plinth in the rural Midlands of England, even though he was covered in bright red paint. After lifting more than 40 coats of red, green, yellow, black, and pale blue paint, the resultant surface is simply marvelous! His alert posture and welcoming countenance would make the perfect addition to a garden wall or beside an entrance. This piece has a beautiful polychromed surface throughout; minor old damage to two claws of right front paw and left inner haunch; visible unmovable crack to left side of stone plinth, shown in Photo #3. We purposely left this lion outside and uncovered over the winter to see if the crack opened and it did not. There is also a chunk out of the plinth on the bottom back left corner (Photo #5) which does not detract from the overall effect.

This large dog is a showstopper! Hand-crafted of sculpted concrete over an iron armature, his stylized form and naive execution are a superb example of French folk art and he looks like Tin-Tin.
