19th C Portuguese Hand-Painted Majolica Cat Figure

19th C Portuguese Hand-Painted Majolica Cat

We absolutely adore this incredibly life-like three-dimensional and very detailed terracotta cat, hand-painted in shades of grey and black. Her eyes, nose and whiskers are so life-like you will think her real from a distance. In amazing antique condition and stamped “J. Belo (Filio), Caldas da Rainha, Portugal” on the underside, we would keep her indoors to preserve the original paint which has a tiny bit of wear on the edges of the ears and tail. J. Belo was a famous maker of majolica beginning in the early 19th C.

French Cast Stone and Iron Flamingo in Old White Paint

French Cast Stone and Iron Flamingo in Old White Paint

We jumped at the chance to buy this grouping of three French flamingos, and this is the white flamingo with a black and yellow-trimmed beak and wings. Made of cast stone with iron legs, and very solid, he cuts a dashing figure with a beautiful weathered surface and patination, as well as sculpted feathers on his back and wings. In excellent condition with no cracks, breaks or repairs, he would lend a whimsical note to your garden, alone or grouped with some of our other flamingos.

Magnificent Life-Size French "Art Populaire" Statue of a Wild Boar/Sanglier

Magnificent Life-Size French "Art Populaire" Statue of a Wild Boar/Sanglier

We simply love French Art Populaire animal figures and “Boris the Boar” is our favorite to date! We’ve seen these critters in real life, as they are all over the Southwest of France, and although anatomically indistinct (thank heavens!), we think him likely a male due to his size. When we bought him, he was in near-perfect condition, but a sloppy shipper sent him back to the States with a partially broken lower rear leg, a missing ear and some chips to his tusks. Nonetheless, our wonderful repair man has just finished restoring Boris and he looks and stands as good as new! He’s a friendly looking guy and has his original glass eyes and a lightly-weathered surface that will only become more beautiful once he find his forever home outside. Like all Art Populaire figures, he is hand-made of cement that has been crafted over an iron armature. Perfect guarding the entrance to your garden, he weighs ~ 325 lbs., and should be installed on concrete footings or a slab of stone to prevent water wicking through his hooves and sinkage over time. Please note he will need to be crated for shipping, but can remain outside year-round if installed properly. And for all you Arkansas Razorback fans, he would be a sensational mascot!

Outstanding French "Art Populaire" Life-Sized Peacock on Faux Bois Table

Outstanding French "Art Populaire" Life-Sized Peacock on Faux Bois Table

We are long-time fans of French Art Populaire animal statues made in the 1930s to 1950s but we have never seen a peacock, let alone one on a faux bois table! Sadly his neck was broken in transport but we have finally had him restored and our guy did an amazing and undetectable job! Made of hand-molded cement over an iron armature and painted in vibrant colors with multiple layers of crusty paint many years ago, his iron legs fit neatly into two holes atop the table. The table comes apart into two pieces (the unpainted round top and the brown painted tree-trunk base) and when assembled, the whole is completely solid and stable. Certainly, Mr. Peacock would lend a fabulous and whimsical note to your garden or conservatory, alone or grouped with some of our other Art Populaire birds.

Pair of Belgian Cast Stone Australian Cattle/Shepherd Dogs with Superb Patina

Pair of Belgian Cast Stone Australian Cattle/Shepherd Dogs with Superb Patina

We love this identical pair of cast stone dogs for their unusual form and stunning patinated surface. They could be shepherds or an ancient breed, but we think they look most like Australian Cattle Dogs. Dating from the 1920s, they are in very good condition overall, with multiple old and weathered chips to the bases. One dog had an old repair to its tail that has recently been redone. Perfect flanking the entrance to your home or garden, they are very heavy and can be left outside uncovered year-round if installed on stone or concrete. Please note that because they are identical, we are selling them separately.

Large Mid-Century French Hand-Made Wrought Iron Eagle Sculpture

Large Mid-Century French Hand-Made Wrought Iron Eagle Sculpture

We are suckers for great animal sculpture, regardless of the age, and this hand-made wrought iron sculpture of a landing eagle does not disappoint. Reputedly made by a French artisan from the Massif Central in the 1940s and handed down through his family, it has exquisite detailing and movement. The claws are especially impressive and the overall form commanding. Attached to its original block of wood, it can easily be fastened to a stone or wooden plinth for display indoors or out. With some light surface rusting, it has obviously been kept inside for most of its life, but would be wonderful outside. Please note that we have a beautiful 19th Century Bathstone Plinth (SPE 1025) that would make a fine base for the eagle.

Pair of French Cast Stone Pink Flamingos, Circa 1960s

Pair of French Cast Stone Pink Flamingos, Circa 1960s

For all you fans of classic garden flamingos, these are the real deal. Entirely made of cast stone over an iron armature, and with a weathered and old, likely original, pink and black painted surface, the form and detailing on these flamingos is fabulous. Both flamingos have hand-incised feather detailing on their backs, outlined on old black and white paint, and their facial expressions are properly insouciant. WIth beautifully-angled legs and detailed joints, the iron armature underneath the cast stone lends additional strength. In very good vintage condition, neither has any cracks, breaks, repairs, or missing parts, although there are a few chips and faint paint crack lines to the legs near the feet. Placed together against a green hedge or in a border bed, these will give you decades of whimsical pleasure. We recommend bringing them indoors for the winter in cold climates, but they will do very well outside year-round in warm areas.
