18th C French Square Hand-Carved Limestone Trough (#2 of Four)

18th C French Square Hand-Carved Limestone Trough (#2 of Four)

It is exceedingly rare to see any trough carved with a “circle in a square”, and we are thrilled to have sourced a matched set of four 18th Century ones. We think they would make magnificent fountains, one in each quadrant of a parterre, either raised up on pedestals and surrounded by boxwoods, or installed at grade with no abutting plantings. Trough #2, seen here, has pretty regular sides but will require a bit of shimming upon installation (shown in photos). There is a single drain hole in the trough (see photos), but it is quite easy to drill through the limestone if you require another one in a different location. This trough will need to be installed on compacted gravel, concrete footings or a concrete slab to prevent sinkage over time. In harsh winter climates, limestone troughs need to be emptied of water in the late fall and the opening covered with a piece of plywood weighted with stones on top. Weight is approximately 1200 lbs. Please note that although we have listed the four troughs separately, we offer a special price for all four purchased together.
