Tall 17th C French Mossy Elaborately Hand-Carved Limestone Finial
This ancient tall finial once served as the capstone for an important building and is known as an "Epí de Faîtage". Its carving is sensational and it has developed an exceptional patina over the course of 350 years that includes a heavy growth of moss. The moss was a bit dry when these photos were taken, but it will return to its lustrous green if placed in a shady and moist area of your garden. The base of the finial base has an area of loss on the back side, but nothing that compromises its beauty or durability. Further, we believe the topmost finial is a later replacement. We have placed the finial on a separate piece of stone to further elevate it, but you may choose not to, as it is stable without the additional block of stone. Perfect as a focal centerpiece in your rose or herb garden or enjoy it in a woodland garden where the greening will be maximized. Please note that we have listed the dimensions below without the additional block of stone that measures 15.5 inches wide x 12 inches deep x 7.5 inches high, so the overall height of the finial with the block is 47.75 inches.
