Enormous Handmade Wooden Alsatian Wine Tubs

Enormous Handmade Wooden Alsatian Wine Tubs

We've had plenty of wooden wine tubs before, but these are just sensational. Handmade of pine and with their original wrought iron hoops, they are in all original, as-found condition with no drain holes as of now (but we can drill them if you like). From a vineyard in the far-eastern French province of Alsace, they have an amazing darkened rustic patina and were originally used to mash the grapes by foot. We have two, each of which differs very slightly in size, but close enough to make a pair of exceptional planters or above-ground herb or vegetable gardens. Solid and without wobble, they can withstand any climate, but if you are going to plant them, we would suggest liners to keep the wood intact for decades to come. They also could be used as rustic soaking tubs or topped with a piece of stone or glass for a large tasting table in your wine cellar. Their tapering oval shape gives them additional interest. One measures 54 inches wide x 38.5" deep (front to back) x 28.75 inches high with an interior height of 26.25 inches. The second one measures 53.25 inches wide x 37.75 inches deep (front to back) x 28.75 high with an interior height of 25.5 inches. Please note that there are two available and we have priced them individually.

Pair of Large Biomorphic Planters by Willy Guhl

Pair of Large Willy Guhl Biomorphic Planters by Willy Guhl

Biomorphic planters are our personal favorites inasmuch as they resemble taco shells and have substantial planting wells. Designed by the iconic Willy Guhl in the 1960s and made by Eternit, SA of durable and lightweight fiber cement, these beauties will work in all climates. This pair has a lovely patina with lichen and look stunning potted up with wavy perennials or mounded moss for a Zen-look. Mix and match with some of the plethora of other Willy Guhl planters of all shapes and sizes that we were fortunate enough to source on our most recent buying trip. Please note that there are a couple of minor well-weathered chips to the rim of the one without the orange lichen, but these do not impair look or function. We also have another four of these biomorphic planters for sale (Stock # CPL 1114) should you need six.

Two Pairs of French Perforated Zinc Florist Pots with Handles

Two Pairs of French Perforated Zinc Florist Pots with Handles

We love these buckets for their unusual form, height, pale grey color, and moveable handles. They were once florist pots or industrial carriers, but we are in the process of converting them to planters with liners. However, they also would make great storage buckets for small logs and kindling inside in a contemporary or industrial environment just as-is. One pair has four holes at the top and is slightly larger than the other two pairs with three holes. Two are stamped “OM” and “HFT” illegibly on their bottoms and all are in excellent antique condition with no cracks, repairs or other damage. They would be gorgeous flanking a doorway planted up with tall wavy grasses or a profuse bloom of glauca or agapanthus. We recently have had custom heavy-duty grey vinyl liners made for all of them that will enable you to pot them up properly. Priced and sold by the pair.

Huge Deep Canted Bowl Planter Designed by Willy Guhl #2

Huge Deep Canted Bowl Planter Designed by Willy Guhl #2

We were fortunate enough to recently find these two very-similarly sized enormous canted bowl planters, designed by the iconic Willy Guhl in the 1960s and produced by Eternit. However, because they are slightly different in size and have different weathered patinas, we are listing and selling them separately. This listing is for the lighter of the two planters, but you can see both pieces here in case you would like a near-pair. Made of fiber cement, a lightweight, strong and durable material, the planter can be left outside year-round, although we recommend that you empty and turn the planter upside-down in harsh winter climates. It would be stunning as a focal point in your garden or center driveway island, potted up with a profuse array of annuals, perennials or topiary. In very good condition, overall, there are a few minor chips to the rim, but no cracks or repairs. The planter has a multitude of drain-holes and a slight rim on the bottom to slightly elevate the planter, enabling good drainage.

Two Large Elephant Ear Planters Designed by Willy Guhl

Two Large Elephant Ear Planters Designed by Willy Guhl

Hardly any dealers know that a mid-20th century French Company named Elo knocked off many of Willy Guhl designs manufactured by Eternit in Switzerland, including that of the famed "Elephant Ear" planters, also generally mis-identified as Handkerchief or Mouchoir planters. The distinguishable difference between the Elo version and the Eternit Elephant Ear versions is that the the Elo planters have four downward sloping edges, while the Eternit/Willy Guhl planters have two diagonally-opposing flat corners and two diagonally-opposing downward sloping corners. In fact, if you look carefully at other listings of "Elephant Ear" planters, you will find many that are mis-labeled as being Willy Guhl, when they are, in fact, Elo. Regardless, we had three beautifully-patinated authentic Elephant Ear planters, designed by WIlly Guhl in the 1960s and hand-made by Eternit, AG of Switzerland (but now the one with the chippy white and red paint has sold). They look sensational potted up with a profuse array of annuals and sedum that spill over the sides or simply with mounded moss for a sleek Zen look. Made of fiber cement, a strong and lightweight material that is durable in all climates, they can be left outside year-round, although we would recommend emptying them of dirt and turning them upside-down in harsh winter climates. Please note that because these were hand-draped during the production process, there is a slight variation on the curves and slopes.

These ribbed planters with integral handles on two sides were designed by the iconic Willy Guhl and produced by Eternit of Switzerland in three sizes. These are the medium-sized ones. In outstanding structural condition, they feature an exceptional red and white painted surface that will pop in your garden. They would be stunning flanking the doorway to your contemporary home or garden, in combination with some of the identical form, but large-sized, ribbed planters (we currently have 5 for sale in naturally-weathered surface (Stock #CPL 1150) See the last two photos for comparison.). We also have 7 naturally-surfaced ribbed planters in this same medium size for sale (Stock #CPL 1141 and CPL 1168). Traditionally known as "vasques", these large shallow saucer planters were designed by the iconic Willy Guhl and produced by Eternit of Switzerland. Perfect flanking the entrance to a contemporary home or garden, they are made of fiber cement, a lightweight and durable material that can be left outside in all weather, although we do recommend emptying them and turning them upside-down in harsh winter climates. Large English Cast Stone Tazza-Form Urn or Fountain

The superb detailing on this tazza-form urn, as well as its size, presence, and wonderful mossy surface make this piece a stand-out. Architecturally-commanding, it would make the perfect centerpiece in your rose or herb garden, either plumbed as a fountain (there is a good-sized center hole that makes plumbing a snap) or planted up with an exuberant, mounded planting with dripping vines down the side. It also stands alone as a piece of sculpture with its beautiful beaded rim and mossy overgrowth. In very good antique condition, there is a very thin and small crack to the edge shown in photo #10, as well as a few old weathered-over chips to the rim that do not impair its beauty or functionality. Made of cast stone and in two parts, it is very heavy and requires 4 men to lift the bowl. It should be sited on a concrete footing or piece of stone to prevent moisture wicking and should be emptied and covered during the winter in harsh climates.

Heavily-Lichened French Cast Stone Pot in Wrought Iron Stand

Heavily-Lichened French Cast Stone Pot in Wrought Iron Stand

This lovely pot loos like terracotta, but is actually made of cast stone with a terracotta finish. It has a heavily-lichened surface with beautifully mossing that will continue to grow as long as the pot is placed in a damp and shady spot. It features its original hand-wrought iron stand that elevates the pot to enable drainage. When we bought it, it had a large hole in the underside that we have had seamlessly restored by our master artisan and the repair is undetectable. Lovely as an object d'art in your garden or to hold a planting of wavy grasses, this one does not disappoint! Dimensions below are overall, but the pot alone measures 20.5 in high x 17 in diameter, while the stand measures 3.5 in high x 12.25 in diameter.

Rare French Faux Bois Pond with Arched Bridge

Rare French Faux Bois Pond with Arched Bridge

Now here is a show-stopper for lovers of faux bois! The very rare single-piece kidney-shaped pond is sufficiently deep to float water plants or pot it up with your favorite flowers or veggies. The moss-laden bridge is original to the pond, but lifts off for easy transport and you can walk on it! There is a small old repair to the back edge of the bridge that is very solid and in no way impacts looks or serviceability. The pond is meant to be sunk into the ground, but is also very attractive left above grade. We have applied multiple coats of black rubberized sealant on the exterior of the pond, as well as fixed the cracks and applied waterproof sealant on the entire interior, so the pond is watertight. We would recommend that this piece not be installed below grade in a garden located in harsh climates because the freeze-thaw cycle will wreak havoc with the pond. It will, however, be perfectly fine left outdoors year-round in cold climates if placed on feet or footings, left above grade, emptied and covered for the winter. The bridge will be fine left uncovered. For the true faux bois connoisseur, this is a piece not to be missed.

Large English Cast Iron Wall Planter Dated "1914"

Large English Cast Iron Wall Planter Dated "1914"

This stunning wall planter was originally the water-hopper for a firehouse in Norfolk England. We stripped its flaking paint and polished it to a high gloss followed by multiple coats of clear-coating, so rust will not become an issue for many years. It comes complete with a perforated bottom to drain water efficiently. It weighs on the order of 150 pounds, so it will need to be installed into stone or joints with heavy bolts, but what an effect! Pot it up with a profuse array of annuals or plant  small trimmed topiary in it for best effect.

Pair of Diamond-Designed French Steel Grape Bucket Planters

Pair of Diamond-Designed French Steel Grape Bucket Planters

This pair of steel wine-harvest buckets has been burnished to a stunning patina and would make wonderful planters or accessories in your wine cellar. From Burgundy, they both have a beautiful raised horizontal diamond design on the exterior with four vertical ribs and are totally solid. One has been monogrammed "LC" in yellow on one side, but the lettering has faded over time. There were a few small holes in the bottom of one when these photos were taken, but these minor flaws have been restored and the buckets are now watertight. Of course, we are happy to drill drain-holes if your intent is to use them as planters. They both measure 27.5 in wide (without handles) x 35 in wide (with handles) x 21.75 in deep x 17.5 in high.

Set Of 4 Rare Large Rectangular Planters by Willy Guhl

This is a very rare planter model designed by Willy Guhl and produced by Eternit of Switzerland. Documented by catalog, they feature steel frames (newly-painted in satin black by us) and lightweight and durable fiber cement panels that have been beautifully weathered over the years. Unfortunately, one planter had only cracked original panels that we could not restore, so we have cut new panels from construction grade cement board (used as underlayment in bathrooms). We expect these panels will also develop a patina over time, but they could be faux-painted to look like the others. Commodious in size and elegant in form, these planters would be magnificent potted up with a profuse display of annuals...perhaps glauda and sweet potato vines or mounded with moss for a Zen look.
