Pair of English Cockspen Garden Armchairs In Teak with Chippy White Paint

Pair of English Cockspen Garden Armchairs In Teak with Chippy White Paint

We love the classical form of these very comfortable English garden chairs, sometimes referred to as “chinoiserie” style, but, in fact, the Brits call them “cockspen” chairs, so that’s good enough for us. Commodious and large, they still have a fair bit of paint, one on more than the other, but are silvered teak beneath the paint. They could, of course, be stripped or re-painted. Perfect at the ends of a large garden dining table, their style will complement a set of more plain chairs, but give you a real pop. Marked with copper plaques on the back side of the seat rail, they read “Andrew Crace Designs, Much Hadham, Hertfordshire”, you can still buy this chair, but new, for around $1500 (shipping to the US not included). So we think they’re a pretty good deal at $1950 for the pair and they’re already here in CT! They are in good vintage condition, with a few nibbles to the bottoms of the feet, but are very solid and sturdy overall and no wobbles.

French 19th Century Hand-Blown Glass Melon Cloche Hanging Light

French 19th Century Hand-Blown Glass Melon Cloche Hanging Light

We have always had a thing for hand-blown French garden cloches that come in two configurations...bell form and melon form. This one is a melon cloche (a little shorter and wider than a bell cloche) and it has been converted into a hanging light with three candelabra sockets that each accept up to a 75 watt bulb. The fittings are custom-crafted to each cloche and each light is sold with six feet of cord, matching chain and a canopy (all in a matte espresso brownish/black finish). The drop from where the three chains meet is ~20 inches. Add another 2.5 inches to allow for the canopy and hook, and the overall drop is ~22.5 inches. Beautiful over a table, in a hallway, or your conservatory, these cloche lights bring the outdoors inside! All cloches have some inherent cloudiness from over 100+ years of mineral deposits, but this serves to diffuse the light beautifully. We presently have multiple finished melon cloche lights in stock with varying degrees of mineralization, as well as several that are in the process of being converted, should you need multiples. Please note that there is a chip to the knob of the cloche that does not impede its look or integrity.

Single Willy Guhl Bowl Planter in Contemporary Steel Stand

Single Willy Guhl Bowl Planter in Contemporary Steel Stand

We love all forms of the contemporary planters designed by the iconic Willy Guhl in the 1960s and made by Eternit of Switzerland in the 60s and 70s. This is a beautifully weathered bowl planter in perfect vintage condition and sold with a custom-made contemporary three-legged steel stand that we had specially made for it. Sorry, we have only one left, but may find more on our next buying trip. Perfect in almost any garden, it is sufficiently deep to hold a profuse array of annual, wavy grasses and sedum, or mounded with moss for a chic Zen look. Made of fiber cement, a lightweight and durable material in all climates, we still recommend emptying this planter of soil and turning it upside down in harsh winter areas.

Tall French Fleurs-de-Lys Terracotta Finial on English Terracotta Plinth

Tall French Fleur-de-Lys Terracotta Finial on English Terracotta Plinth

We’ve never seen any finial this tall, let alone such a stunning French one with 2 fleurs-de-lys and a detailed pineapple-form top. The beaded decoration near the bottom, combined with the fluted upright sections and barley-twist motif (near the base) are truly stunning, as is the condition. The color is a lovely pale salmon pink with a faded pale gray patina that works with everything in your garden. We have married it to a low English Victorian reeded plinth/pedestal to ground it and add even more presence. The plinth is in very good overall condition with a few nicks and chips and features a chippy and old white painted surface that is perfect to reveal the color underneath. Place this as the center focal point in an herb or rose garden and enjoy a truly unique piece of antique garden art. We strongly recommend installing the terracotta plinth on a piece of stone so that it does not wick moisture from the ground in climates that experience freeze-thaw cycles. BTW, the finial and base come apart for easy shipping and installation.

Pair of Statuesque French 18th C Hand-Carved Limestone French Ball Finials

Pair of Statuesque French 18th C Hand-Carved Limestone French Ball Finials

This pair of exceptional hand-carved 18th Century ball finials is certainly not perfect, but completely authentic and have great form and presence. With come remnants of old white paint that we believe mostly cover old repairs, they are extremely solid and will do fine in any climate left outside uncovered. The ball of one has been attached by means of a lead solder (probably over a pintel), while the other sits flat on the base with an original lead collar. One sphere is not perfectly round, but a result of hand-carving and we think these slight differences make them all the more interesting and authentic. Please note there are chips and nicks to both finials, as shown in the photos, but let us know if you need more pics to make a decision! Each finial weighs on the order of 400 lbs.

French Three Piece Bistro Set with 19th Century Chairs

French Three Piece Bistro Set with 19th Century Chairs

Oh, to sit in the shade, underneath a tree, with a drink in hand, planning your next holiday. That’s what this lovely three-piece bistro set in old green paint was made for! The chairs have beautiful pierced seats, heart-motif backs, and date to around 1890, while the wrought and sheet iron table dates from the 1930s. Yes, they’re a marriage, but a good one we think, albeit the chairs and table differ slightly in their shades of green. In excellent overall antique condition, the chairs are solid and without wobble, as is the table, whose top is about as level as they come at this age. These can weather all climates outside left uncovered but are light enough to easily bring indoors. And you can always use them on a balcony or in a small kitchen for a cosy corner.

Scottish "Faux Bois" Fireclay Garden Seat/ Table Base/Pedestal

Scottish "Faux Bois" Fireclay Garden Seat/ Table Base/Pedestal

This little beauty has an extraordinary form, finish and coloration that really does resemble a tree trunk until you are up-close. And then it gets better! Intended as a garden seat, we think it would make an outstanding coffee or side table, indoors or out, or be the perfect pedestal for a naturalistic statue. With a few nicks and chips here and there, these will weather over if left outside, but do not detract from its overall beauty or functionality. And although it is quite sturdy, we would recommend bringing it in during winter if you live in a harsh climate.

Enormous French 19th C Wrought Iron Demilune Window Frame/Mirror/Trellis

Enormous French 19th C Wrought Iron Demilune Window Frame/Mirror/Trellis

We are total suckers for great architectural pieces, particularly those with massive scale, although we often have difficulty sharing our visions for each piece with our clients. This is a spectacular ten-foot wide mid-19th C demilune window frame that still has one old pane of non-original glass, but think of the possibilities! It could be mirrored and installed in a grand entranceway, or we could have steel supports welded to the bottom so it will stand alone as a trellis (or reflecting mirror) in a garden. We also have some large brackets stashed somewhere in the barn that could be attached perpendicularly to the corners of the straight edge and the entire piece mounted as a pergola or glassed-in protective shield over a doorway. Or stand it up against a barn and let the climbing vines go to work. Regardless, it is a treasure and in perfect structural condition (we will knock out the remaining glass shards to keep you safe).

Rare Large 17th C French Hand-Carved Limestone Corner Trough

Rare Large 17th C French Hand-Carved Limestone Corner Trough

Truly a very rare and special piece from Cognac, France, this trough was hand-carved to fit into a corner and, as such, has a rounded or bowed front on two sides, while the other two sides are flat. Originally used as a water cistern, it has a lightly-weathered surface with some moss, as it sat under a covered roof for centuries. There is an old repair to the front right of the curved side that shows as a vertical line, but it’s not ugly and in fact, will weather over in a few years. The trough is entirely watertight, but the photos do show a small area of dampness around our makeshift corks that we use to plug the original two drain holes. It will not leak once you have it properly plugged. It would make a fabulous water feature and is sufficiently deep to hold koi and water plants galore. Or plant it up with a spectacular array of flowers and vines. Please email or call us for better photos if you want. These aren’t the greatest! Please note that this piece weighs about 3000 lbs and will require a forklift to unload from the delivery truck. It should be installed on a concrete base to prevent sinking into the ground. The trough is hardy in all climates, provided that you empty it and cover the top in locations where freezing occurs in the winter.

French Hand-Carved Limestone Bench with Simple Supports

French Hand-Carved Limestone Bench with Simple Supports

This lovely and simple bench is a marriage of a pair of hand-carved limestone supports from the mid-19th Century with a carved top from the 1930s. The top is slightly more yellow in color than the supports, especially in the rain, but we think it beautiful nonetheless. Perfect for a resting spot between two large shrubs or trees, this bench should be installed on stone footings underneath the supports to prevent moisture wicking and radial expansion during freeze-thaw cycles in cold climates. Overall condition is good, but there is a missing piece to one of the supports, 3 sides of the supports are unfinished and there are a few nicks to the top edges shown in the photos.

Pair of Huge English Hand-Carved Sandstone Spheres Painted Matte Black

Pair of Huge English Hand-Carved Sandstone Spheres Painted Matte Black

This is a magnificent and rare pair of very large carved red sandstone spheres that originally had 3 bent bronze feet that we have since removed. Originally, they were mostly black from over 100 years of coal dust accumulation in the north of England, so we filled the holes, painted the spheres a matte black for a contemporary look, and then rolled them around in gravel for a bit of a distressed look that still has a hint of the reddish color underneath. In overall lovely condition, these have a few age-appropriate nicks and bumps that decidedly show their antiquity.

Primitive French Washerwoman's Console Table in Pine

Primitive French Washerwoman's Console Table in Pine

Originally used by French housewives to scrub laundry down by their local river or lake, tables such as these are now very difficult to find in France, as they are immediately snapped up for their elegant, simple form, worn tabletop surfaces, and sturdy construction. This is a beauty and has an unusual asymmetric top, where we believe the short piece was replaced in the mid-20th Century. With simple nails + mortise and tenon construction, hand-planed legs, and pleasingly rough top, the simple beauty shines through. It would be wonderful as a console in a monastic contemporary loft or can be used outside as a serving table. Very Axel Vervoordt! Please note that because this table was hand-made, there are slight variations in dimensions noted below. For clarity, the table measures 31.5 inches high at one end, 31.25 inches high at the centerpoint, and 31 inches high at the other end. The top measures 13.5 inches deep, but the legs extend outwards, making the overall depth of the table 18.5 inches.

Large Round French Galvanized Tub Planter or Fountain with Handles

Large Round French Galvanized Tub Planter or Fountain with Handles

We love galvanized pieces because of their resistance to rust, as well as their steel grey/blue patina. This tub is a beauty and very utilitarian because of its large size. It’s large enough to place a recirculating pump inside with a flume of water and water plants to hide the pump, or it would make a magnificent centrally-placed planter and can accommodate a profusion of blooms, topiary, or both. You could also use it for parties as a drinks cooler as it has a drain hole in the bottom that is easy to plug with a cork. In very good condition overall, it does have some minor dents commensurate with age and usage. The opposing handles are a real plus, as it makes carrying this piece around the garden a breeze, plus adds a decorative touch.

Pair of Weathered English Cast Stone Pineapple Finials

We’re always in search of pineapple or acorn finials and this pair is truly lovely. With a beautiful grey patina overall that is darker on the top, they would make an impressive statement atop a stone wall flanking the entrance to your garden, on a long dining table to bring the outdoors in, or on different height pedestals for a more tailored look. One is in perfect condition, while the other has a small hairline crack to the joint where the socle meets the underside of the pineapple (see last photo).
