Large Hand Carved 18th Century French Limestone Trough with Patina

Large Hand Carved 18th Century French Limestone Trough with Patina

One of the finest troughs sourced on our most recent buying trip to France, this stunning hand carved limestone trough is in excellent antique condition and features a fabulous patina with heavy lichen in white, yellow and orange. It has no cracks or repairs and is water-tight. Interior depth is 15.35 inches. Place it in your garden filled with water plants and maybe even a few small koi for a stunning display. There is an original and rusted-through drainpipe on the exterior of one of the short sides that we can cut and remove for you prior to shipping. Please note that in cold winter climates, the trough must be drained and covered, and we recommend that you install it on a concrete slab to prevent sinking and water wicking from the bottom, as it weighs about 2500 lbs.

Enormous-Scale Hand-Made English Wooden Camel-Back Bench

Enormous-Scale Hand-Made English Wooden Camel-Back Bench

There are no adequate words to describe the beauty and scale of this extraordinary English wooden bench, handmade from ash, oak, and sycamore. At over nine feet in width and five feet in height, two people can comfortably sit lengthwise and never touch feet. Six people can sit on it with room to spare. The stunning natural silver and brown patina is true to the color in these photos, which were taken after a rainstorm. Since then, we have sealed the entire bench with a water repellant so it can stay outside and in good condition year-round in any climate. Striking from all angles, the bench is extremely solid and with no wobble, and would be magnificent placed in a woodland garden or at the end of a large allée where an oversized piece is required. Weighing in at around 350-400 lbs, this piece amazes they eye with its form and scale and definitely has the “WOW” factor. Truly, a one-of-a-kind piece, but please install the feet on pieces of stone or concrete footings to prevent sinking and erosion to feet.

Pair of French Wrought Iron Beaux Arts-Style Gates with Mounting Hardware #2

Pair of French Wrought Iron Beaux Arts-Style Gates with Mounting Hardware #2

We found these gates in Provence, along with an identical, but slightly smaller pair (POR 1059) that come complete with their hinges and mounting hardware, to make installation a snap. Beautifully wrought with a curved top and loads of sensuous scrolls, these would be perfect as access gates to your side or back garden. In older green paint with some mild surface rusting, they have an ingenious fastening mechanism at the top that lifts up to open and securely fastens when you want them closed (shown in photos #5-6). Please note that in the last photo, this pair of gates is on the right, with the slightly smaller pair on the left. Priced and sold as a pair. The overall dimensions are listed below, but the gates themselves (without the mounting hardware) measure 38” wide when abutted.

French Cast Stone and Iron White Flamingo

French Cast Stone and Iron White Flamingo

We jumped at the chance to buy this grouping of four French flamingos and a heron (shown in the last two photos), and this is the white flamingo. Made of cast stone with iron legs, and very solid, he cuts a dashing figure, in spite of the recent, but attractively-done, painted surface. Note the iron legs that cleverly meld into the hand-painted splayed feet on the base. In excellent condition with no cracks, breaks or repairs, he would lend a whimsical note to your garden, alone or grouped with the other flamingos.

Weathered French Hand-Carved Limestone Cherub Head

Weathered French Hand-Carved Limestone Cherub Head

Although there is a date of 1861 incised below the face, we know this piece is much earlier from its form and carving detail. We believe she originally was embedded in a wall over a doorway and could be so again. However, she would also make a lovely garden accent, perched against a tree base, or converted into a piece of sculpture atop a tall pole for the garden. Alternatively, imagine her atop a large table or desk indoors as an objet d’art, on a short museum mount (but half the backside would need to be removed because of weight). Regardless, she makes a very beautiful and unusual statement.

Very Long French Lichened Teak Bench, Signed Paris

The lichened surface on this estate-sized bench is truly amazing and takes many decades to achieve this perfect patina. At almost 8 feet long, it would be wonderful in front of a long, deep border or for outdoor dining. In excellent structural condition, it has no wobbles or sags and will give you decades of pleasure. Please note that this bench does not need to be covered or brought inside, even in the harshest of winters.

We have a large complementary teak table that will seat 8-10 (FTD 1029), but the bench is slightly longer than the table, so we are selling it separately from the table. Both would do well on a deck or lawn overlooking the ocean or lake, where no one wants their back to the view! Please note that seat height is 16.25 inches.

Pair of English Lichen-Encrusted Lutyens-Style Benches in Teak

Pair of English Lichen-Encrusted Lutyens-Style Benches in Teak

Elegant and classical without being fussy, Lutyens benches are always a hit with our clients. Perfect in a formal garden or up against a simple green hedge, and originally designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1910, these are particularly notable for their amazing lichen-encrusted surface. Although one bench has more lichen than the other, they both are stand-outs and in excellent structural condition. The photos were taken just after our cherry trees dropped their blossoms, so the pink petals brush off. Lutyens benches were originally made in two lengths and this is the shorter of the two sizes. Feel free to leave these outside and uncovered in all climates year-round and they will only become more beautiful over time.

Enormous Handmade Wooden Alsatian Wine Tubs

Enormous Handmade Wooden Alsatian Wine Tubs

We've had plenty of wooden wine tubs before, but these are just sensational. Handmade of pine and with their original wrought iron hoops, they are in all original, as-found condition with no drain holes as of now (but we can drill them if you like). From a vineyard in the far-eastern French province of Alsace, they have an amazing darkened rustic patina and were originally used to mash the grapes by foot. We have two, each of which differs very slightly in size, but close enough to make a pair of exceptional planters or above-ground herb or vegetable gardens. Solid and without wobble, they can withstand any climate, but if you are going to plant them, we would suggest liners to keep the wood intact for decades to come. They also could be used as rustic soaking tubs or topped with a piece of stone or glass for a large tasting table in your wine cellar. Their tapering oval shape gives them additional interest. One measures 54 inches wide x 38.5" deep (front to back) x 28.75 inches high with an interior height of 26.25 inches. The second one measures 53.25 inches wide x 37.75 inches deep (front to back) x 28.75 high with an interior height of 25.5 inches. Please note that there are two available and we have priced them individually.

Large Domed Willy Guhl Dog House with Pan

Large Domed Willy Guhl Dog House with Pan

It's rare to see Willy Guhl dog houses, but we've never come across one with its original pan before. Originally made in two sizes, this is the larger of the two. This one is a beauty, loaded with moss and lichen, and in very good condition overall. The house itself has been skim-coated with a rough cement-like compound that has worn away in some places, but this only adds to the overall patina and effect. Large enough to house a medium-sized dog, give your four-legged family member a stunning gift that works in any contemporary or mid-century setting. Please note that there is a small chip to the front right corner of the dog house, and the pan has a missing piece shown in the photos. Made of lightweight and durable fiber cement, this piece can be left outside year-round, but we would site the pan on stone or gravel. The dog house alone measures 38.25 inches wide x 29.08 inches deep x 31 inches high, while the pan measures 39.25 inches wide x 30.5 inches deep x 2.75 inches high (including the interior lip). Pair of Tall 19th C French Wrought Iron Gates

Pair of Tall 19th C French Wrought Iron Gates

Yes, we do have a thing for gates, particularly early and high-quality ones like this tall pair of hand-wrought iron gates that date to around 1830. Their size, intricate detailing, and romantic feel make them the perfect sentinels for your enclosed garden or they would look equally well mounted on stone gate piers at the entrance to your home. In excellent condition, they have no breaks, cracks, replaced parts or repairs, and presently sport slightly-chippy white paint that is perhaps 30 years old, with small bits of surface rust showing through. A latch would need to be fashioned in order to keep them closed, and they do not have hinges, but are an easy mount with pre-drilled holes near the top and bottom. If you are not keen on the white paint, they can be sandblasted and repainted to your custom specifications for a modest upcharge. Please note that the dimensions below are for the 2 pieces when they abut each other.

Large Pointed Vasque Planter by Willy Guhl in Stand

Large Pointed Vase Planter by Willy Guhl in Stand

This very large planter, designed by the iconic Willy Guhl and made by Eternit of Switzerland, is a very rare piece indeed. WIth its wide-sloping conical form, it is best displayed in a three-legged steel stand that we have had custom made for it. Featuring a mottled and chipped dark green painted patina on the outside, the planter has a beautiful weathered patina around the edge and is ready to plant with a profuse array of grasses or annuals for a striking focal point in your garden. Please note that there is a new repair to a full-thickness crack that was there when we bought it, but it is now as good as new. There are also some very minor chips to the edge commensurate with age and use. Made of fiber cement, a lightweight and durable material, this planter works well in all climates, but we do suggest you empty it and turn upside down in harsh winter areas.

Please note that the planter alone measures 46.75” diameter x 15.5“ high, while the stand measures 24” diameter x 21“ inches high. When the two are assembled, the overall height is 29“.

Two French Mid-Century Modern Steel Benches

Two French Mid-Century Modern Steel Benches

When we bought these distinctive steel benches in France, we thought they were a pair, but once we started photographing, we noticed that the perforated holes on the left-side bench are just a shade smaller than the ones on the right side (see photos 15 and 16). Nonetheless, unless they are placed tightly side-by-side, none but you will be the wiser. In old white crusty paint with remnants of green underpainting, they would be stunning in a contemporary garden or on the terrace or deck of a modern home. Supremely comfortable with canted backs, we can always have them sandblasted and repainted or powder-coated to your custom specifications for a modest upcharge. Please note that although we would prefer to sell them as a pair, we have listed the price per bench, in case you want just one.

This pair has a lovely patina with lichen and look stunning potted up with wavy perennials or mounded moss for a Zen-look. Mix and match with some of the plethora of other Willy Guhl planters of all shapes and sizes that we were fortunate enough to source on our most recent buying trip. 'Vanitas'

'Vanitas’ by Stefaan Eyckmans

Oil on panel, signed and dated 2000.

Unframed: H: 15.7 in W: 23.6 in D: 0.25 in

Sold unframed. Reverse side with older unfinished Eyckmans' painting and artist's label. Minor wear to outer 0.25-0.5 inch edge of painting that will not show when framed.

Price:  $8,500

Ref: SE 1040

Created in 2000, and much inspired by the Old Masters, this painting combines many “vanitas” symbols—reminders that change and death are inevitable. The skull, aging books, extinguished candle, fallen cup, and stopped watch are beautifully composed in close-up, utilizing a minimum of negative space. One can see the fuzzy and unrecognizable reflection of the painter, quite rare for him, in the silver incense holder. Note the complex composition, the strong use of chiaroscuro, and the masterful depiction of the human skull, the threads of the unravelling books, and the smoke of the candle. Please note that the last photo is of the reverse side of the painting, indicating the that panel was reused. Unlike Stefaan’s other works, this painting is sold unframed.

This painting is available for viewing at The Elemental Garden, the artist’s exclusive representative and gallery in the U.S.

Stefaan Eyckmans was born in Niel, Belgium, a brickyard village in the shadow of Antwerp. The son of Louis Eyckmans, a painter and commercial artist, Stefaan was introduced to the tools of drawing and painting at an early age.

During his student days, Stefaan was strongly influenced by the Flemish Primitives, the great 17th century still life painters, and the Antwerp hyperrealist movement, led by Willem Dolphyn. Later, Stefaan's work shows the impact of Henk Helmantel's impasto technique and the austere compositions of Giorgio Morandi.

After completing his education as a graphic designer and illustrator, Stefaan worked for a time in advertising, simultaneously concentrating more and more on his painting. He soon discovered that he was forever drawn to the silent world of the studio where patient observation and exacting style allowed him to slowly build his timeless compositions…paintings that serve as an antidote to our stressful computer-dominated lifestyles.

After years of experimenting with numerous media and materials, Stefaan developed a tonal technique employed by the Old Masters that incorporates common everyday objects with modern materials and colors, resulting in Contemporary Realism with its roots in 17th and 18th century traditional painting.

The simple objects in Stefaan's paintings are transformed by his masterful technique to show us their unexpected beauty. Essential to this effect is the interaction of light and dark, multi-layering, and glazing. The result is a powerful and beautiful whole, strong and alive, that initially attracts the viewer from a distance through color, composition, and lighting, but which is fully revealed only upon examination of each painting's intimate details.

Stefaan has exhibited at numerous prestigious international venues and his paintings are on permanent display at galleries in the US, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Stefaan's patrons include collectors around the world, from museum CEOs to captains of industry to designers to art-lovers everywhere, each of whom finds unrivaled beauty and peace in his paintings.

Pair of French Art Deco Wrought Iron Gates or Room Dividers

Pair of French Art Deco Wrought Iron Gates or Room Dividers

Originally used as balcony dividers and mounted front to back, envision these stunning Deco gates facing each other to provide the perfect frame for your garden or interior room. Handwrought of iron and with a delicate and intricate scrolling form, they remind us of butterflies or spider-webs, both appropriate themes for a garden or Art Deco home. In old, somewhat crusty black paint with a small amount of surface rusting show through, we love the old patina, but they can be sandblasted and repainted to your custom specifications for a modest upcharge. So versatile, as they can be installed abutting each other to swing open or further apart, and mounted to a wall and floor, as standing pieces of art on either side of a large entranceway. Three-Dimensional Metal and Acrylic Painting of Beach Chairs by the Seaside

Three-Dimensional Metal and Acrylic Painting of Beach Chairs by the Seaside

Not our usual fare, but we were completely taken with the uniqueness of this three-dimensional painting with its vibrant colors, realistic depiction of sand and sea, and the striped chairs, which put you smack in the middle of a French plage (beach). Overall in good vintage condition, there are some losses to the metal frames of the beach chairs, a patch where the applied "sand" has worn away, and maybe a bit of bleed-through of rust in the sky (or it could be the way the artist painted it), but we think this only adds to its realistic feel. Perfect anywhere at a beach home and stunning when paired with our red "Pecheur" painted bistro set with 8 chairs (Stock # FDS 1019).

Pair of French Cast Stone Pink Flamingos, Circa 1960s

Pair of French Cast Stone Pink Flamingos, Circa 1960s

For all you fans of classic garden flamingos, these are the real deal. Entirely made of cast stone over an iron armature, and with a weathered and old, likely original, pink and black painted surface, the form and detailing on these flamingos is fabulous. Both flamingos have hand-incised feather detailing on their backs, outlined on old black and white paint, and their facial expressions are properly insouciant. WIth beautifully-angled legs and detailed joints, the iron armature underneath the cast stone lends additional strength. In very good vintage condition, neither has any cracks, breaks, repairs, or missing parts, although there are a few chips and faint paint crack lines to the legs near the feet. Placed together against a green hedge or in a border bed, these will give you decades of whimsical pleasure. We recommend bringing them indoors for the winter in cold climates, but they will do very well outside year-round in warm areas.

Long Primitive French Console Table in Chestnut and Oak

This wonderful old work table in chestnut and oak isi very Wabi-Sabi. Handmade and with loads of character, it would make a great console table in a minimal space environment, whether it be a loft, industrial setting, or mixed with more refined antiques. The legs have some old darkly-rusted iron repairs, and show old wormwood, which has been treated. The top has two old knothoes that have been knocked out in its former life. The table is steady, stabile, and fairly heavy and the true color of the wood is shown in Photos #11 and 12. Please note that because this table was handmade, it measures 31.25 inches high at one end, 30.5 inches high in the center and 29 inches high at the other end, but we think the slightly sloping surface only makes it more beautiful. However, the legs can be trimmed to make the table completely level for a modest up-charge. The top is 10 inches deep, but the overall depth for the table (measured at the feet) is 15.25 inches at one end and 15 inches at the other end. The table was originally constructed using mortise and tenon, but also has nails and pegs, and the two short horizontal cross-supports for the canted legs are not the same size. Absolute rustic perfection!
