Weathered French Hand-Carved Limestone Cherub Head

Weathered French Hand-Carved Limestone Cherub Head

Although there is a date of 1861 incised below the face, we know this piece is much earlier from its form and carving detail. We believe she originally was embedded in a wall over a doorway and could be so again. However, she would also make a lovely garden accent, perched against a tree base, or converted into a piece of sculpture atop a tall pole for the garden. Alternatively, imagine her atop a large table or desk indoors as an objet d’art, on a short museum mount (but half the backside would need to be removed because of weight). Regardless, she makes a very beautiful and unusual statement.

French Hand Carved Stone Head of the Virgin from the Croix Rouge, Lyon, France

French Hand Carved Stone Head of the Virgin from the Croix Rouge, Lyon, France

We normally don't buy religious pieces, but the skill of carving, the depth of her serenity, and the large size made us reconsider this outstanding piece. Sourced from the Croix Rouge (Red Cross) in Lyon during a renovation, and dating to the early 19th century, this piece makes an exceptional focal point outside in the garden or inside on a museum mount. The brown fibers on the statue are moss that will green up, if she is placed directly in contact with the earth and left in a damp and shady spot. The carving is sensational with her wavy hair and closed eyes, and her face is in perfect weathered condition. Although made of a hard white limestone, we recommend that you bring her indoors in harsh winter climates.

French Cast Stone Statue of Venus at the Bath

French Cast Stone Statue of Venus at the Bath

Contrary to popular belief, classical garden statuary has not fallen out of fashion and pieces like this lovely figure of Venus at the Bath are very much in demand. In three-quarter size, Venus is bending down to finish disrobing with one foot planted on a rock outcropping. Her curly hair is tied in a topknot and her face shows a calm and beautiful contenance. With exceptional weathered patina, especially on her back, shoulders and knees, she has obviously spent much of her life outside, and can continue to do so if you install her on a piece of stone or cement footing. Durable outside in all climates, she would warrant covering in harsh winters where ice might catch in her crevices. In overall very good antique condition, there is a small amount of scraping to the right base of the statue incurred in shipping, as well as a small portion of her right shin that exhibits evidence of some old flaking. Her surface can be protected and preserved by a few coats of Permalac (available on Amazon), a sealant and water repellant that does not change the surface in any way. Please note that the foot of the statue measures 12.25 inches in diameter.

French Cast Stone Statue of Autumn with Beautiful Patina

Classical statuary still has a place in the garden or home, and this figure of Autumn is stunning. With a gorgeous weathered patina, heavy yellow lichen, and a small amount of moss, she is posed holding a cluster of grapes across her chest and another one in her left hand. The cast stone detailing is elaborate and still quite crisp and she presents beautifully from all angles. Photos 1-6 show her standing alone and photos 7- 12 show her placed atop a low English 19th C terracotta pedestal with chippy white paint (you can purchase her with or without the pedestal). Great as a focal point in the center of a rose garden, in the corner of a hallway or living room, or even atop a large table in the garden. Please note that the base of the statue measures 12.5 inches wide x 10 inches deep.

Set of English Lead Four Seasons from Oprah Winfrey's Private Collection

Set of English Lead Four Seasons from Oprah Winfrey's Private Collection

A spectacular set of four lead figures, each representing a different season, are raised up on large plinth blocks of limestone with a beveled top edge. From Oprah Winfrey's personal collection, where they once graced her Montecito estate, they would make a stunning display in the center of four boxwood squares and a superb focal point in your parterre. From the left in the first photo, the figures represent Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn. Winter has a hooded cloak wrapped tightly around her, Spring features a crown of leaves and holds a cluster of leaves and grapes, Summer holds a garland of flowers, and Autumn holds a scythe in one hand and a sheaf of wheat tucked under her arm. Unsigned, but with lovely detailing, the figures sport a beautifully-weathered patina, as do the tops and some sides of the limestone plinths. The condition of the figures is perfect, with no breaks or repairs (and only a few squirrel nibbles on some of the feet), while the limestone plinths are in very good condition with only a few chips and nicks incurred in shipping that will soon weather-over. There is a slight variation in the dimensions of the figures, but they generally measure 31 inches high, while the plinths uniformly measure 18 inches square x 20.75 inches high. Dimensions below are the maximum for all figures. Please call if you would like individual measurements for the figures.

Magnificent French 19th C Zinc Fountain with Provenance

Magnificent French 19th C Zinc Fountain with Provenance

This magnificent 19th century zinc fountain was purchased from the NY estate of Helen Finch Foulds, heir to the Finch Pruyn Lumber Company in Glens Falls, NY, and best known for her $4.5 Million bequest to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the late 1950s. It depicts a winged putto holding a fish aloft and out of the reach of a child triton, on a lily leaf-covered base and is in original, unpainted surface. An allegory of Love, this fountain was inspired by pieces commissioned by Louis XIV who built Versailles, and is signed indistinctly on its base. Such exceptional works of art were always sculpted first by a well-known and respected artist prior to casting, and we believe this is likely the work of Joseph Louie August Claudin (French, 1837-1913), an Alsatian sculptor. It is in excellent condition overall, with a small piece missing from the base (likely where it was plumbed) and two small seam separations that do not affect either the look or functionality of the fountain. Zinc fountains of this period were cast in multiple pieces from the original sculpture and then assembled and seamed together by hand. It would make a stunning centerpiece in a formal garden, slightly elevated in a round pool and surrounded by a parterre of boxwood. Alternatively, leave it unplumbed and enjoy it as the gorgeous piece of sculpture it is.

Verdigris Bronze Doll Head Mold

Verdigris Bronze Doll Head Mold

Certainly not our usual fare, but definitely a statement! We have only one of these remaining from a collection of natural verdigris bronze doll head molds from a defunct factory in Falls River, MA. We have thought of lighting them from within and hanging them from a tree at Halloween, but no doubt, you have much better taste. Museum mounts can be fabricated at your request for an additional charge. The one remaining is the larger head with a cage shown to the left.

French Cast Stone Angel Figural Planter

French Cast Stone Angel Figural Planter

We are still not entirely sure what this piece was originally intended as, given its hollow tree-form base, but we would use it as a planter, umbrella stand or, most likely, as the fabulous piece of sculpture it is without adornments. Johnny Angel is missing his left hand, but no matter as his naïveté and joie de vivre outshine all. We can have a bottom mortared to the tree-form base if you like to accommodate a large planting. In good condition overall, the figure has a few hairline cracks to the right shoulder and right ankle that are very solid and do not compromise form or function in any way. These can be repaired upon request.

English Carved Marble Statue of Woman on Tiptoes

English Carved Marble Statue of Woman on Tiptoes

This exceptional figure is a testament to the finest Neoclassical carving of the 19th C. Extraordinary in its detail, and with a beautifully-weathered surface, "Tiptoes" comes to life, leaning on a tree and grasping the folds of her voluminous skirt. Her long curly tresses cascade down her back and the most delicate ribbon holds her hair. Although missing the fingers on her right hand, she is in excellent condition otherwise. A magnificent piece inside or out. Priced without the stand, but we will sell the stand if desired.

English Fireclay Fountain attributed to LEFCO

English Fireclay Fountain attributed to LEFCO

This unusual and lovely fountain in two parts features a frog-decorated rockwood base surmounted with a seated child grasping a fish. It is easy to plumb and place in a small basin for your city garden or terrace. Alternatively, it doubles as a statue and would make a charming focal point in a small herb or rose garden. In overall excellent condition, there are a few tiny chips to the base of the fountain and a small chip on the mouth of the fish. Surface commensurate with age. Fireclay is very hardy in cold weather and can be left outside year-round. Unsigned, but reliably attributed to the Leeds Fireclay Company (LEFCO).

Carved Limestone Statue of Children on Tall Pedestal

Carved Limestone Statue of Children on Tall Pedestal

What a charming piece and quite rare! This beautifully-carved statue is most probably from the Low Countries (Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg) and features a young boy with mandolin serenading his little sister. She gazes upwards adoringly at him, offering him a fistful of flowers. The statue has a beautiful patina and moss in spots that will return to a lustrous green, once placed back outside in the cool, damp shade. There is a solid repair to brim of the boy's hat executed by our restorer that is difficult to detect. Otherwise, the figure is in excellent condition. We have paired it with a tall, wreath-decorated pedestal with recessed panels from England. Amazingly, this pedestal looks identical to buff terracotta, but is actually made from cast stone and dates to around 1970.

Magnificent Life-Sized Italian Terracotta Statue of Flora

Magnificent Life-Size Italian Terracotta Statue of Flora

It is rare to find a life-size garden terracotta statue of such age that, other than missing its hands, is in remarkably good condition. Stamped on the base, the maker is illegible, but one can make out that she originated from Milan. This life-sized statue of Flora, Goddess of Spring, is magnificently-sculpted and hand-pieced and the details on her hair and dress make this a work of art that will command admiration for centuries to come. Suitable for interior or exterior decoration, Flora would make an outstanding focal point at the center of a boxwood parterre or in a foyer, conservatory or dining room. If placed outside, she will need to be covered in winter unless your climate is mild year-round.
