French 19th C Hand-Carved Stone Capital Sundial
Reputedly from the Chateau de Cieurac in the Southwest of France, this stunning capital is elaborately carved with medieval figures on all four sides. Featuring wrought iron Roman numerals and gnomon (pointer) that we believe were added later, the sundial would look great in any small low garden, perched atop a short pedestal and surrounded by dwarf boxwood or a ring of short annuals. Dating to the early 19th century, and carved from the iron-laden limestone found in the Lot region of France, it is in very good condition overall, with the normal natural fissures to the stone shown in the photos and age-appropriate weathering. We recommend you cover this piece over the winter in harsh climates or bring it indoors. Please note that while the height of the capital itself is 14.5 inches, it measures 21 inches high with the gnomon. Minor chipping to capital commensurate with age and use.
