Unusual Coffee Table Made from a 200 Year-Old Honey-Brown Tribulum

A tribulum is an ancient hand-made threshing board, inlaid with chips of flint or stone, that has been used since Roman times to separate grains from the chaff.

We were fortunate enough to score two of these coffee tables, this one in a lovely honey brown color, and the other in a driftwood grey, each with four contemporary black steel legs (now sold).

Each is unique and hand-made and we adore the unusual form with one downward sloping wooden end and the main part of the table inlaid with small stones. While they are stunning as is, you can have glass tops cut to cover the stone-laden area for a smooth top, or use as is with a large tray for serving drinks.

One tribulum form, once common in Mediterranean countries, was about three to four feet wide and six feet deep (these dimensions often vary, however), consisting of two or three wooden planks assembled to one another, of more than four inches wide, in which several hard and cutting flints crammed into the bottom part pull along over the grains. In the rear part there is a large ring nailed, that is used to tie the rope that pulls it and to which two horses are usually harnessed; and a person, sitting on the threshing board, drives it in circles over the cereal that is spread on the threshing floor. Should the person need more weight, he need only put some big stones over it.

Large Willy Guhl Biomorphic Planter

Large Willy Guhl Biomorphic Planter

Biomorphic planters are our personal favorites inasmuch as they resemble taco shells and have substantial planting wells. Designed by the iconic Willy Guhl in the 1960s and made by Eternit, SA of durable and lightweight fiber cement, these beauties will work in all climates. These ones are particularly stunning because of their perfect patina and condition. Mix and match with some of the plethora of other Willy Guhl planters of all shapes and sizes that we were fortunate enough to source on our most recent buying trip. We originally had 7 of these, but 6 have sold, so only 1 remains.

Large 18th C French Carved Stone Mortar Planter/Fountain

Large 18th C French Carved Stone Mortar Planter/Fountain

This late 18th C mortar was originally used to grind food stuffs or medicines but it is the perfect size for a planter or small fountain. Hand-carved from a hard limestone from the Var region of France, it is in excellent condition, with a couple of minor surface hairline cracks, but holds water. It can easily be converted into a small fountain, as it is sufficiently deep to hold a small recirculating pump, or we can drill a center drain hole to convert it into a planter. The patina and coloration are superb and you will not be disappointed with this one! Interior depth = 10" and weight is ~400 lbs. Please note that with the 4 protruding corners (or ears), the diameter is 27.75”, while the diameter of the mortar without ears is 22”.

Seven French Art Deco Wallpaper Roller Lamp Bases

Seven French Art Deco Wallpaper Roller Lamp Bases

When wallpaper is printed by hand, separate rollers are made to each imprint a different color on the background. These vintage rollers from the 1930s are truly unusual and would make great lamps or sculptural elements on a mantlepiece or table. Ranging in height from 23.75" to 20.5" and between 5.75" and 7.5" in diameter, they are easily converted to lamps because of their hollow insides. Many are made of mahogany with hand carved wooden or bronze appliqués. Please call or email for specific dimensions.
