Magnificent Life-Size French Terracotta Griffin, Signed "Giscard, Toulouse"
This magnificent and rare terracotta griffin was crafted by the famous firm of Giscard in Toulouse and dates to circa 1860. Giscard was known for the highest quality terracotta monuments, statuary, and facades made especially for the public buildings and aristocracy in and around Toulouse. The griffin is in extraordinary condition, loaded with lichen and bits of moss on his base, and would make a most inviting focal point in your garden. He is wingless, and there is a large planting well where his wings would have been that enables you to grow your own live "green" wings perhaps maiden or ostrich ferns. He is signed on the base by his maker "Giscard, Toulouse". Photo #10 shows the griffin atop our large octagonal terracotta pedestal (SPE 1009).
