Carved Marble Head of Aphrodite After the Antique
This stunning and hand-carved marble head depicts the Goddess Aphrodite, and is stylistically in keeping with Roman museum pieces dating to 100 A.D. In wonderful condition with a softly worn patina, the carving detail is superb. Although her original socle has broken off, we have mounted her on an antique block of marble with a stainless steel pintel that pivots 360 degrees so you can adjust the head's position. Purchased in England as a Regency-era head, we think she may be earlier. Illegible marks on the side of the base, possibly Greek letters. Small chip to back corner of bust and very light and small area of discoloration to top of head. A rare and very desirable collector's piece!
