Stephen James Garforth hails from the Yorkshire Dales in England and was educated at the Scarborough College in graphic design and at Medway College, University of Kent, where he was awarded top honors in Advertising Photography.
Following 6 years as assistant to photography icons Donald Silverstein and Adrian Flowers, Steve opened his own studio in London, where he specialized in still life photography for blue chip design agencies and corporate clients, including Terrance Conran, IBM, BMW, Land Rover, Audi, and major international advertising agencies including TBWA, J. Walter Thompson, and Ogilvy & Mather.
During his 30 years tenure in commercial photography, Steve became renowned for complex shots where the synthesis of weather, location, models, and technical crew was required to obtain the ultimate result.
His eye for composition and color equal his expertise in technical aspects, whether on location or in the studio.
Since 2006, Steve has focused on photographic compositions wherein form, texture, and light are paramount. His images are original, composed in the camera with minimal post-production, and have resulted in cutting edge photographs that capture a unique moment in time and place. His photographs have been exhibited at the Here and Now Chelsea Arts Club, PZ Gallery Penzance, and at various venues in France and England.
Working with his 5X4 Field camera and X-Pan camera, Steve has assembled a magnificent portfolio of photographs that speaks to the beauty of our world, juxtaposed with decay and conflict. His ability to capture the unique essence of a subject, at a fleeting moment in time, makes his originality stand alone in a medium where all too often gimmickry and poor composition pass for talent.
We at The Elemental Garden are honored that Steve has chosen us to represent him exclusively as, in partnership, we seek to bring his extraordinary work to the attention of collectors and designers alike. His photographs will soon be available in black & white, low saturation, and color and in small and large formats to meet all your design needs.
