Very rare and with exceptional depth and detail, this magnificent signed cast iron urn was designed and made by the master JJ Ducel, widely considered the best 19th C French foundry. Founded in 1810, it was subsequently acquired by Val D`Osne upon the death of Monsieur Ducel in 1878. The two main tableaus on this urn are exceptional and feature classical Greek mythological motifs. Acanthus leaves, dogs and boy and girl head handles complete this work of art. The photos show some very recent rust incurred during shipping that can be easily removed. Excellent condition. This urn is so impressive, you will want to mount it on a plinth and use it either in your entrance way or at the center of your garden. Foot of urn measures 11.63" square. France, CA 1840-1860.
